01 The Start of a Storm

I think curiosity killed me instead of the cat. Every time, I can’t stand the suspense or the mystery, and so I seek trouble when I know it’s best to avoid these situations completely. If a friend that I don’t really talk to ends up texting me, I still respond. I know he or she probably just wants something from me, yet my undying inquisitiveness can’t be stopped. I’m just irked by not knowing in general, and this is exactly why I am stuck in this horrible circumstance.

Chapter 9: Mutiny
During my time of rest, I had overheard rumours of an uprising. The villagers were distressed about the King’s excessive taxes, the poor management of the treasury, the expulsion of Scientians, and the murders of the Oracle and Desiderium. The King splurged on new buildings to prove his glory, and on treatments to prolong his life. He had killed too many Scientians that they were forced to migrate to another kingdom. The Scientians had brought along their knowledge and trade to Urcis, which were what the villagers appreciated. The townspeople also respected the Spetians. The Spetians were recognized worldwide for their gifts; they were gifts from heaven. To kill what heaven had blessed the people with was sacrilegious.

Act 6: The Consequences of Joking

Credits and thanks goes to whore!sica for the poster!

All I get from Ren is loads of laughter. The man can’t control himself. He’s laughing so hard that he’s moving from furniture to furniture just to laugh. There he goes sitting on a chair laughing. There he goes rolling on the ground laughing. There he goes landing on his bed for support while laughing. There he goes back on the floor laughing.

Act 5: Two-Faced

As expected, Shun never replies, but trying to understand him wasn’t hard. Walking past the gym where varisty teams practice, I see Shun’s face among the basketball team photos. Wow, I think. That guy is athletic then. Being on the varsity team in university is particularly hard for every sport. He was even the MVP for last year. Okay, that means he’s not younger than me. He might be older. Who knows? We’ll see.

Act 4: Mr. Seventeen

Credits and thanks goes to whore!sica for the poster!

One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight . . .

I’m counting people and sadly not bills. Male, female, female, male, male, female, male times two . . .

Mr. Seventeen is getting closer, and I’m getting more and more nervous. Please, I beg you, please make him normal weight and tall. I don’t mean to be mean, but I’m doing this purely for money. So, I really need to base everything on the first impression. I have to make myself like him to get him to like me back. Twisted. Really.

Once class ends, Ren follows me to the food court, where I stop to grab two slices of pepperoni pizza and an iced tea. It’s around five in the evening, and Ren asks when I’m paying, “You’re eating that early for dinner? And that unhealthily?”

Hey!

So, I thought I'd type up a page about references from chapter 1 of For the Love of Manga (FTLOM). I might not cover all of them because that wouldn't be too fun on my part. The subtle ones I shall skip. Those that actually read manga a lot would be able to detect those. If you don't, it's okay! The really obvious ones, where I mention the title of a manga or a specific scene/situation, will be the references that I cover on blogs.

Here are some that I mentioned in chapter one!

Act 2: The Motivation

Posted Image

No one really takes notice of Ren in class. Sure, the girls take a few extra looks at him. After all, no one goes to class in a black suit and combat boots. I seriously think that inside, he’s an attention-seeking who.re, kind of like Tamaki senpai from Ouran High School Host Club. It’s too bad I can’t throw a blonde wig on him and make him wear that blue uniform of theirs. Oh, and he’s too old to be cosplaying some high school student. As a university student though, his age is fine. All the other students assume that he’s a mature student who is trying to restart his life. I swear university security can be so low at times. Anyone can be a student, and isn’t that the point of learning? Yuck, I’m still reminded of my old high school teachers saying cheesy things like that.

Act 1: The Deal

Here’s how it typically works in a manga. The female protagonist, who is just about to start high school or transfer to some place, meets a guy, who accidentally discovers her secret. He blackmails her, and she becomes his slave. In the end, they fall in love with each other despite their differences. Plus, he actually isn’t that evil. He just has a tough time showing his soft side, but yes, he does care about the girl.
